John Kirby, director of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, announced his plans to resign from his position.
Kirby’s resignation allows him to assume the position of dean of the College of the Environment and Life Sciences at the University of Rhode Island. His resignation takes effect on Aug. 20.
The South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station is an entity that South Dakota State University’s College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences oversees. Kirby served as director of the station for more than four years. He also served as an associate dean for the college.
Barry Dunn, dean of SDSU’s College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, said Kirby provided a tremendous service to the college and to the state.
“During my short time as dean, Dr. Kirby was a great resource,” said Dunn. “We will seek out an interim director as he begins his transition, but Dr. Kirby’s invaluable skills will not be easily replaced.”
The South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station was created in 1887 as part of the Hatch Act that created SDSU as the state’s land-grant institution. Its mission has been to conduct research to enhance quality of life in South Dakota through the beneficial use and development of human, economic, and natural resources.
Kirby said his experience in South Dakota would aid him as he starts his new role in Rhode Island.
“My time as director of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station was very rewarding, and I know it will shape my future endeavors as I move forward with this new opportunity,” Kirby said. “I want to thank all the students, staff, faculty, and colleagues who work so hard for the people of South Dakota, they do great things. It has been a true pleasure to work with so many great people during my time in South Dakota.”
